Sock yarn - which to choose?
Personally, I find that sock yarn that has at least 20% nylon content preferable to 100% woollen sock yarn. A lot of time and love goes into making a pair of socks. Plus, socks take a hammering, especially on the heel, ball and toe areas. It's best to err on the side of caution, and use a yarn that has 20-25% nylon content. Also, a yarn that has some BFL (Bluefaced Leicester) content is a good idea. BFL yarn has a long staple length, which creates a hard-wearing yarn.

I love it when your yarn does all the hard work for you. That's the benefit of self-striping yarn! Opal yarn is my absolute favourite work-horse yarn. I've since discovered West Yorkshire Spinners BFL 4ply yarn and Scheepjes "Downtown" (pictured).
