This Isn't an Optical Illusion, These Cracked Logs Are Really Bursting with Light
Tasmania-based furniture designer Duncan Meerding loves the outback wilderness, which comes across in his work – his most popular pieces are simple logs whose natural cracks emit soft, warm light. Meerding is also legally blind, so the use of light in his pieces helps him communicate how he sees the world
Viking round shields: The sagas specifically mention linden wood for shield construction, although finds from graves shows mostly other timbers, such as fir, alder and poplar. These timbers are not very dense and are light in the hand, they were often reinforced with leather or iron around the rim. The size was usually 75 – 90 cm in diameter and the weight could be up to 10 kilos. (9th-century wooden shield)
