100 years ago today, Canadian military doctor and artillery commander Major John McCrae wrote possibly the most famous piece of literature of WW1. His words led to the creation of remembrance poppies which are now an international symbol of remembrance around the world including the UK, Canada, United States, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and many other countries, due to the reference to poppies growing over the graves of fallen soldiers.
