The lack of soldiers in this photo could imply that the survivors of a charge are returning to their trench after going "over the top."

Enid Bagnold wrote "A Diary Without Dates" about her experience as a VAD nurse during World War I.  The book caused such a sensation that she was fired as a nurse and later became an ambulance driver.
