Having gone through the selection process, a Jewish woman and her children walk to the gas chambers at Birkenau. Birkenau, part of the Auschwitz complex of camps (it was known as Auschwitz II) means "Birch Wood", and was named for the birch forest surrounding it. Unlike Auschwitz I, which was the main camp, and Auschwitz III, Monovitz, or Buna, a factory work camp, Birkenau was used solely for extermination and cremation of human beings. I can think of few images more terrible than this.
