William Harvey (1 April 1578 – 3 June 1657) was an English physician, who described completely and in detail the systemic circulation and properties of blood being pumped to the body by the heart, though earlier writers had provided precursors of the theory. After his death the William Harvey Hospital was constructed in the town of Ashford, several miles from his birthplace of Folkestone.

Sergeant William Harvey Carney USA, ~ 29 Feb 1840-8 Dec 1908 was the first African American to be awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor. He rescued the US Flag as its' bearer fell  then carried it to the enemy ramparts  back after which he declared: "Boys, the old flag never touched the ground!"

On May 1900 Sergeant William Harvey Carney became the first African American to be awarded the Medal of Honor, for his heroism on July 1863 in the Assault on the Fort Wagner during the Civil War.

“William Harvey was an English physician who was the first person to describe completely and in detail the systemic circulation and properties of blood being pumped to the body by the heart. Harvey had theorized the existence of capillaries: however, unable to discern them due to the aforementioned scarcity of instruments at this disposal, he was never truly capable of understanding how blood passed from the arterioles into the venues.”

More was being understood about the human body - William Harvey greatly advanced our understanding of the circulation of blood.
