What I Had Before I Had You This debut novel blew me away with the beauty of its language and the honesty of its narrator, who looks away for a moment and loses her son with autism -- which in turn sets off a series of memories about her own bipolar mother. The reality of living with a parent with mental illness, and how it impacts a child, is heartbreakingly beautiful in Cornwell's capable hands.
I hate when people say there mood is so bipolar. You have no idea what you are talking about. It is a chronic mental illness that is beyond difficult to deal with at times! ~ Bipolar & all mental illnesses are not anyone's fault. They cannot control it. You can just live with it as best you can.
Today's society seems to evolve around mental illnesses. People are obsessed with them. People make them sound romantic and glamorous. The internet and fanfics and Tumblr and the rest make it sound like by having a mental illness, you're automatically going to be popular and beautiful, or you'll find a boy/girl who'll want to make it better. That's not true. Mental illness is dark and scary. You don't want to have it just to make you look good.
When we struggle with a mental illness, we often want to change what’s going on in our brain right now. But that’s not possible. The only thing to do is to accept what your brain is throwing at you and learn from it. But what is possible, is taking actions today that are going to make your brain better able to make healthy decisions in the future.
Quote on mental health: Mental illness is the only disease that can make you deny its own existence. Certainly the idea that the brain can deny its own illness is a frightening thought. -Natasha Tracy. www.HealthyPlace.com
This is a picture for anyone who thinks depression is a choice. It's a real thing that a lot of people can't control. Don't tell me to "Get over it". I can't. Don't call me names or bully me because of the way I am. If you are reading this and you have a mental disorder know that you are beautiful and don't let anyone tell you otherwise.
