Wasp/hornet trap: a mason jar and a funnel. Put watered down orange juice in the jar. The wasps/hornets are attracted to the fruit juice so they'll go down the funnel but won't be able to find their way out and eventually drown. Pet and kid safe.

The down-side of this wasp trap is it also attracts and traps beneficial insects such as lacewing and hoverflies which are a natural pest control of aphids, so watch timing and usage spaces.
