Knock-kneed and bowlegged are terms used to describe an individual’s gait or stance. A person who is knock-kneed has a medical condition known as a valgus deformity, an outward rotation of the tibia (distal leg bone) on the femur (proximal leg bone). Bowlegged describes a medical condition known as a varus deformity, an inward rotation of the tibia resulting in a leg that looks like it is bowed out.

This study reports on the results of using a custom made knee orthosis as an alternative to surgical intervention and in four patients with valgus/varus deformity in excess of 20 degrees. The Varum Valgum adjustable stress (V-VAS™) custom knee orthosis is a new concept for treating patients who present with medial or lateral compartmental arthropathies. A presentation by Derek Jones and William Munro

A shepherd's crook deformity refers to a coxa varus angulation of the proximal femur, classically seen in femoral involvement by fibrous dysplasia, although may be seen in other disorders such as Paget disese of bone and osteogenesis imperfecta. The shape of the proximal femur resembels that of the staff carried by herders (shepherds), which is known as a crook.
