On 12 August 1945 (3 days before the end of WW2) she was badly damaged by torpedo bomber attack, and permanently decommissioned on the 29th.

7 December 1941 - USS Downes (DD 375) was a Mahan-class destroyer. She was in drydock at Pearl Harbor, Oahu, US Territory of Hawaii, along with USS Cassin and USS Pennsylvania. She caught fire from Cassin, burned; returned to service November 1943.
