USS Enterprise, designated CV-6 and affectionately called Big E, was the sole surviving Yorktown class aircraft carrier. Her keel was laid down on 16 July 1934 and she was launched on 3 October 1936. Along with USS Saratoga and USS Ranger, she is one of the only pre-WWII carriers to survive the war, and is the most decorated ship of WWII.
Island structure of Yorktown Class USS Enterprise (CV-6). The Yorktown class was a class of three aircraft carriers (Enterprise CV-6, along with Yorktown CV-5 and Hornet CV-8) completed shortly before World War II. They bore the brunt of early action in that war, and USS Enterprise, the sole survivor of the class, became the most decorated ship in the history of the U.S. Navy.
