Ulysses S. Grant (April 27, 1822 – July 23, 1885) Commander in the American Civil War. Under Grant, the Union Army defeated the Confederate military; the war, & secession, ended with the surrender of Robert E. Lee's army at Appomattox. Grant gave generous terms; Confederate troops surrendered their weapons & were allowed to return to their homes, with their mounts, on the condition that they would not take up arms against the U.S. Within a few weeks the Civil War was over.

Ulysses S. Grant -18th President of US - from 1869 to 1877 - served 2 terms,  Under Grant, the Union Army defeated the Confederate military which ended the Civil War. He was a 'career soldier'; graduated from West Point. Born in 1882. His mother was an "emotionally detached" woman (she never visited him once in the White House).  He was never a wealthy man, but was a caring & devoted husband and father. Died in1885 of throat cancer at the age of 63.
