Imperial Palace East Gardens of Edo castle - former site of Edo Castle's innermost defenses. The moats, walls, gates and several guardhouses still exist. Edo Castle was residence of the Tokugawa shogun ruling Japan 1603-1867. Emperor Meiji resided there 1868-1888 before moving to newly constructed Imperial Palace.
The current Imperial Palace (皇居, Kōkyo) is located on the former site of Edo Castle, a large park area surrounded by moats and massive stone walls in the center of Tokyo, a short walk from Tokyo Station. It is the residence of Japan's Imperial Family
