Theodore Dreiser (August 27, 1871 – December 28, 1945) was an American novelist and journalist; he is best known for his works "Sister Carrie" and "An American Tragedy". He and Wharton were close friends. Dresier would come and stay with Esherick, and part of "An American Tragedy" was writting while enjoying time with Wharton. Much correspondence exists between the two friends.
