As a kid I spent a lot of time on the Maryland shore. Squinting out across the endless blue expanse, I could have sworn I saw the edge of Portugal once or twice. I was shocked recently to learn that my childhood imagination had it all wrong. (Truly, a first.) With telescopic vision, I wouldn’t see the coast of Europe. I’d see South America.

We've only been here a week but I've already fallen head over heels in love with Provence. It's so unlike what we're used to back in Charente-Maritime that it feels like another country altogether! Today we took a drive around Étang de Berre, stopping briefly in Istres before continuing on to Martigues where we enjoyed a stroll around town and an amazing dinner at Guénat's.
