Explore Gullah Heritage History around Beaufort, SC - In the late 1600s, enslaved West Africans were brought to the Georgia and South Carolina sea islands to tend the rice and cotton fields. As the Emanciapation Proclamation brought freedom, many fled to Hilton Head Island and its Union Army outpost to start the first freedman’s village in the United States: Mitchelville. Many of the decendants, known as Gullah, stayed on the Island.
Acadian flag painted on poles. This was EVERYWHERE while I visited New Brunswick, Canada 2015. Acadians are the decendants of french colonies from the 17&18 centuries. Acadians can be found mostly in Canadian maritime provinces and in Maine and Louisiana in the US. If anyone has seen similar symbolism in American places, please share :)
