Eartha M.M. White and her mother Clara White, 1910. A former opera singer, Eartha helped create the first school for black children in the Bayard neighborhood of Jacksonville. Eartha lived frugally on a teacher's wages, so she could support philanthropic causes. In 1904, she founded the Clara White Mission to honor her mother, a former slave who ran a soup kitchen in her home. Founded to serve blacks in segregated Jacksonville, the Clara White Mission now serves people of all races.

READ THE ARTICLE! One teacher's opinion. "So why don't I think we should have Teacher Appreciation Week? Because I don't think society is truly appreciating teachers the way that we should. Lay offs, lack of funding in the education system, pay cuts, tying teacher wages to bizarre test scores. All of this screams that we have a total and complete *lack* of appreciation. For this reason, Teacher Appreciation Week rings a little false. It’s like a small token where a larger one should be."
