An Air Force Test Pilot School T-38C passes in front of the sun at a supersonic speed, creating shockwaves that are caught photographically for research. NASA is using a modern version of schlieren imagery to visualize supersonic flow phenomena with full-scale aircraft in flight. The results will help engineers design a quiet supersonic transport.
NASA plans supersonic speed for U.S. commercial flights
chrisgaffey: April 1985. The only image ever taken of Concorde flying at supersonic speed, 1,350 mph. Taken from a RAF Tornado fighter jet, which rendezvoused with Concorde for just 4 minutes over the Irish Sea, rapidly running out of fuel and struggling to keep up at Mach 2.
WEBSTA @ daily_badass - Via @gunther_timezIntroducing the 14.9 SOP. Necked down from a 20mm vulcan casing, this round is capable of supersonic speed to 5400 yards, and lethal out to 3.5 miles. Where ever you hide, this will find you. This will decimate all-Project creators: @50westarmory
The ME262, the first jet fighter. This amazing aircraft was so far ahead of its time. It could almost reach supersonic speed and contained an automatic cannon. Since it was close to the end of the war when it came out and the Germans we so short of materials, it really was a death trap and many pilots died. Much of the interior was made of wood because so many materials could not be found. The fuel was incredibly explosive and yet this plane still lead the way for all modern fighters today.
Vacuum Cannon Drives Ping Pong Ball at Supersonic Speed
A cloud forms as this F/A-18 Hornet speeds up to supersonic speed. Flying this fast forms what's called a bow shock in front of them. Similar bow shocks are also found in a variety of forms in space. Credit: John Gay, USS Constellation, U.S. Navy.
Rocketumblr | F-35B. For the first time in aviation history, the most lethal fighter characteristics – supersonic speed, radar-evading stealth, extreme agility and short takeoff/vertical landing capability (STOVL) – have been combined in a single platform; the F-35B.
