An Air Force Test Pilot School T-38C passes in front of the sun at a supersonic speed, creating shockwaves that are caught photographically for research. NASA is using a modern version of schlieren imagery to visualize supersonic flow phenomena with full-scale aircraft in flight. The results will help engineers design a quiet supersonic transport.

The ME262, the first jet fighter. This amazing aircraft was so far ahead of its time. It could almost reach supersonic speed and contained an automatic cannon. Since it was close to the end of the war when it came out and the Germans we so short of materials, it really was a death trap and many pilots died. Much of the interior was made of wood because so many materials could not be found. The fuel was incredibly explosive and yet this plane still lead the way for all modern fighters today.
