Ornithogalum (also Chincherinchee, Star of Bethlehem) - This flower is known particularly for its ability to open in the morning and close in the evening. Add it to your bouquet or let it fill in your centerpieces. Season: year-round Colors: white, ivory, yellow, orange Cost: $$
The white form of this Star of Bethlehem (Ornithogalum thyrsioides 'Chesapeake Snowflake') is quite rare in nature. Dense heads of long-lasting, pure white flowers sit atop a sturdy 10-inch scape. This cultivar contrasts brilliant white petals with very dark-colored anthers and stigma. Chesapeake Snowflake Star of Bethlehem is native to South Africa and is in the same plant family as hyacinths.
This page gave me an idea for a Christmas card: instead of candy cane paper, angel paper foundation. Then build the tree of circles: Magi, shepherds, and animals in the bottom three, Mary and Joseph in the middle two, and the Baby Jesus in the top circle. Put the star of Bethlehem up on top. All it would have to say inside is "Merry Christmas."
