Located outside the walls of Xian's ancient city is the Eight Immortals Temple. The temple is the largest Taoist temple in Xian and also the most famous Taoist Temple in northwest China. Records indicate that the temple was first constructed during the Song Dynasty (960-1279) and has been enlarged and remodeled during successive dynasties. The main buildings were all built during the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911). The temple is named after the most famous eight immortals of the Taoist faith.
