Directed by E. Elias Merhige. With John Malkovich, Willem Dafoe, Udo Kier, Cary Elwes. The filming of Nosferatu (1922) is hampered by the fact that its star Max Schreck is taking the role of a vampire far more seriously than seems humanly possible.
Shadow of the Vampire (2000)- A vampire movie about making a vampire movie, huzzah! Takes place on the set of Nosferatu. What if Max Schreck was really a vampire? I suppose the results would have been similar to this quiet oddity. It sort of came and went from theaters, but its respect for the original mixed with the absurdity of its own plot gives it a good balance balance.
Willem Dafoe, 'Shadow of the Vampire' "It became part of the working day—to look in the mirror and see myself go away." Willem Dafoe was practical about his duty on Shadow of the Vampire, spending four hours a day in makeup. He wore pounds of makeup over a prosthetic mask which was glued to his face. And lets not forget those fingernails.
