It's a study in Monterey County's Santa Lucia Highlands AVA today as I compare and contrast two @redstitchwine Pinot Noirs. One from Soberanes Vineyards, the other from Sierra Mar. One with notes of fresh herbs placed from the ground with whispers of cranberries, eucalyptus, and wet grass -- and a CONSTANT background smokiness — like from a smoldering campfire. The other of Raspberries, cranberries, with a hint of sea-breeze salt and funk. Which is which and, more importantly, WHY?…

The Santa Lucia Highlands (SLH) is perched on the western slopes of the Santa Lucia range above the Salinas River Valley. The drive has a discovery around every turn: fresh fruit and vegetable stands, views across the valley to the Pinnacles, the Soledad Mission dating from 1791, and small, family-run #wineries where the host pouring for you is often likely to be the #winemaker.

Second stop along the @riverroadwinetrail is at @pessagno_winery to taste through the current lineup. Got to meet my IG friend @damnmom IRL who manages the tasting room. Tasted the pinot noir Rosé and the pinot noir from the 4 Boys vineyard in Santa Lucia Highlands along with tannat and few red Bordeaux blends from Pedregal Vineyard in Paicines. Ray Franscioni is the mastermind of the Bordeaux style wine from Pedregal, which is awesome. Another nice spot along the River Road Wine Trail…
