Helen, mother of Constantine (the Great), ruled Rome for a time. As her son had, Helen converted to Christianity as an adult. False rumor suggests she was Jewish. She went on a pilgrimage to Palestine where she cared for the poor and needy, does good deeds, and built churches. Her pilgrimage may have been politically motivated. Because she reportedly found the true cross upon which Christ was crucified, she became a saint in the Eastern Orthodox and Roman Catholic Church.
