Outside Bow Station was the Bryant & May Testimonial Fountain, an ornate structure with an emblematic female figure seated beneath a canopy, the whole standing some thirty feet high. It was erected in 1872 by employees of the firm to commemorate the defeat of a proposed tax of a halfpenny per box on matches, included in the Budget of 1871 introduced by Robert Lowe, afterwards Lord Sherbrook.
