Pankhurst was a leading British women's rights activist, who led the movement to win the right for women to vote.  Emmeline Goulden was born on 14 July 1858 in Manchester into a family with a tradition of radical politics. In 1879, she married Richard Pankhurst, a lawyer and supporter of the women's suffrage movement. He was the author of the Married Women's Property Acts of 1870 and 1882, which allowed women to keep earnings or property acquired before and after marriage.

Emmeline Pankhurst was a militant woman suffrage organiser in England.  Born Emmeline Goulden, she married Richard Pankhurst, a lawyer. He was a friend of John Stuart Mill (author of The Subjection of Women). Richard Pankhurst was the author of the first British woman suffrage bill and of the Married Women's Property Acts of 1870 and 1882. She became active in the National Union of Women's Suffrage Societies.In 1889, she founded the Women's Franchise League.

Born in Manchester in 1882, Sylvia was the second daughter of Emmeline Pankhurst, founder of the Women's Social & Political Union; the movement known as the Suffragettes which campaigned to get women the vote.
