The refractory period is when it is difficult to restimulate a region of a neuron during an action potential and for a little time after. It is divided into two phases: the absolute refractory period lasts from the start of the action potential until the cell returns to RMP, in which no stimulus can trigger a new action potential; the relative refractory period lasts until the end of hyperpolarization, in which a new action potential can be triggered only with an unusually strong stimulus.
