In 1731, Benjamin Lay went to Barbados where he was appalled to see the conditions under which slaves were kept. After that, he took up the Quaker's beliefs, although he was more radical than most. He once stood in the snow without a coat and in bare feet to remind Friends of the hardship experienced by slaves. He also kidnapped a child and only returned him to his father after authorities came to him, he tried to show how African parents felt when their children were captured and sold.
