Setcreasea pallida, or Purple Heart, a native of Mexico, is named for the striking purple color of the plant in full sun. Drought tolerant. A wonderful choice for hot dry conditions. Makes an excellent ground cover and looks stunning when paired with yellow lantana or pink vinca..

We have two of these pots flanking our front entry. They were purchased from Crate & Barrel but tended to tip over. They have a false bottom that we filled with sand to stop them from tipping. The pots have Sanseveria as the vertical element, Senecio and Burro's Tail draping over the sides and the purple is Purple Heart (Setcresea). design and photo by Nancy Pedersen

Spring Planting & Garden Envy….

Purple Heart Plant: Outdoors : Home & Garden Television This plant is aggressive! My mom put a broken bit in my yard and it has taken over the bed. It is pretty but I have to keep it trimmed back. It fills out the bed nicely. I plan to fill in a bed that nothing really grows and then place potted plants on top as I have found this plants chokes out other plants.

Tradescantia pallida 'Purple Heart' at San Marcos Growers. Probably not a perennial in zone 5.
