MERKI - SLAVIC, OLD-POLISH ALPHABET “Merki” are house coats of arms used by Pomeranian fishermen. Fishing equipment was marked in order to get back what was lost at sea (for example fishing nets). It was used till the 20th century, at least from the 18th century. Some people think this custom is much older and these signs constitute remains of our Slavic, Old-Polish alphabet. In fact, they look like runes. In the photo - merki from a private museum in Jastarnia.
