It’s an absolute first under any government in India, and a big brownie point for the Mamata Banerjee administration. The West Bengal government has directed the Kolkata Police to begin recruitment of transgenders into the Civic Police Volunteer Force (CPVC). This move is now being seen as a way to end the existing “stigma” and “discrimination” against the transgender community.
Margaret Damer Dawson co-founded the Women Police Volunteers. Dawson became Commandant and Mary Allen became Sub-Commandant. The British government had always opposed the idea of policewomen, but with a large numbers of policemen joining the British Army, it was considered a good idea to have women volunteers to help run the service. In 1915, Dawson renamed her organization, the Women's Police Service (WPS).
