For the next 40 years this momentous discovery influenced research into human evolution. Then in 1953 Piltdown hit the headlines again, this time revealed as a hoax, a scientific fraud of shocking proportions.

Big Forgery No 8- Named for the place it was discovered (Piltdown, East Sussex, England), Piltdown man was believed to be the fossilized remains of an unknown early human. The findings, a skull and jawbone, completely stumped scientists at the time. It was “found” in 1912, and in 1953 it was discovered that someone had deliberately combined the skull of a human with the jawbone of an orangutan.
