Big Forgery No 8- Named for the place it was discovered (Piltdown, East Sussex, England), Piltdown man was believed to be the fossilized remains of an unknown early human. The findings, a skull and jawbone, completely stumped scientists at the time. It was “found” in 1912, and in 1953 it was discovered that someone had deliberately combined the skull of a human with the jawbone of an orangutan.
In 1912 Piltdown Man hit the headlines. Evidence of the evolutionary 'missing link' between apes and humans had been found, in England. For the next 40 years this momentous discovery influenced research into human evolution. Then in 1953 Piltdown hit the headlines again, this time revealed as a hoax, a scientific fraud of shocking proportions.
