Parasol. Used for a very expensive parasol, this is a fine example of Belgian appliqué net lace worked in the form of a parasol cover. Parasol covers were made separately from the parasols and tacked on at the end of the manufacturing process.
A parasol from the 1870s made of white lace over black silk with a carved elephant tusk ivory handle. The parasol was a popular accessory throughout the 19th century and was used to protect ladies from the effects of the sun at a period when pale skin was the height of fashion. - 1870s fashion
