Television is not the truth. Television is a god-damned amusement park. Television is a circus, a carnival, a travelling troupe of acrobats, storytellers dancers, singers, jugglers, sideshow freaks, lion tamers and football players. We're in the boredom-killing business. - Paddy Chayefsky
This speech is so terrifying--and mesmerizing at the same time. It's prescient. It was a marker of fear when I first heard it as a teenager, and then, some revenant, gloaming through the Reagan years, and unfolding with a smile through the nineties. It weaved itself into the culture so naturally that you almost didn't notice. And then after the crash, too late to change. To suffer, in even greater fear.
