Nelson Mandela Anti-apartheid activist who became President of South Africa from 1994 to 1999, the first to be elected in a fully democratic process. Mandela served 27 years in prison. Following his release in 1990, Mandela supported reconciliation and negotiation, and led the transition towards multi-racial democracy in South Africa. NOBEL PEACE PRIZE ~ President Barack Obama donated the $ 1.4 million from his Nobel Peace Prize to helping students, veterans' families & survivors of Haiti's earthquake, among others, drawing attention to organizations he said that "do extraordinary work." Obama gave a total of $ 750,000 to 6 groups that help kids go to college, $ 250,000 to Fisher's House (which provides housing for families with loved ones @U.S. Veterans Administration hospitals), & $ 200,000 to earthquake-ravaged Haiti.
