Black Marble - Americas NASA image acquired April 18 - October 23, 2012 This image of North and South America at night is a composite assembled from data acquired by the Suomi NPP satellite in April and October 2012. The new data was mapped over existing Blue Marble imagery of Earth to provide a realistic view of the planet.

NASA astronaut Chris Cassidy, an Expedition 36 flight engineer, uses a 400mm lens on a digital still camera to photograph the Earth roughly 250 miles below him. The Cupola is an ESA-built observatory module of the International Space Station (ISS). The Cupola’s 31 inch window is the largest ever used in space.

A View of Venus: The Magellan spacecraft imaged more than 98% of Venus. A mosaic of the Magellan images (most with illumination from the west) forms the image base. Gaps in the Magellan coverage were filled with images from the Earth-based Arecibo radar. The composite image was processed to improve contrast and to emphasize small features, and was color-coded to represent elevation. An orthographic projection was used, simulating a distant view of one hemisphere of the planet.
