The Medical University of South Carolina (usually referred to as MUSC) is one of the five biggest employers in the Charleston area. MUSC is partly to thank for Charleston's good healthcare system. People come from around the state to see its specialists, and you’ll find a hospital and quite a few doctors’ offices affiliated with MUSC.

Anna Decosta Banks was the first head nurse at the Hospital and Training School for Nurses in South Carolina. Born in 1869, she was trained at Hampton Insititute's Dixie Hospital of Nursing. She returned to Charleston and served as Head nurse for 32 yeas. (A wing of the Medical University of So. Carolina is now named in her honor for her service to the state of So. Carolina.)
