Modest Petrovich Mussorgsky (1839–1881) Russian composer, one of the group known as "The Five". He was an innovator of Russian music in the romantic period. He strove to achieve a uniquely Russian musical identity, often in deliberate defiance of the established conventions of Western music.

Modest Mussorgsky (1839 - 1881)  Along with Piotr Ilyitch Tchaikovsky, the greatest Russian composer of the Mussorgsky  was born into a wealthy rural, landowning family. He began by picking out on the piano the tunes he heard from the serfs on his family's estate. At the age of six, he began to study piano with his mother.
