Norway's Midnight Sun Marathon. The world's northernmost marathon attracts runners from over 50 nations who compete at night, but in broad daylight – courtesy of the midnight sun, which doesn't set in this part of Arctic Norway from mid-May to mid-July. The marathon itself is the main event, but there is also a half-marathon, a 10-kilometer race, a 4.2-kilometer fun-run, and a children's race.
White Nights Festival, Russia Date: May 27 - August 2 This international arts festival is celebrated during the season of the midnight sun in the city of St. Petersburg. The festivities include classic ballet, opera and music events — featuring both Russian and international artists. The Scarlet Sails celebration is the most famous public event of the festival owing to its spectacular fireworks show.

Mariinsky Theater, St. Petersburg, Russia * St. Petersburg is Russia's capital of the arts, and its center is the Mariinsky Theater, open since 1860 and where many of the masterpieces of Tchaikovsky, Mussorgsky, and Rimsky-Korsakov originally premiered. Visit between late May and mid-July for the prestigious Stars of the White Nights Festival, the annual musical celebration of the summer solstice's midnight sun.
