Rococo Memento Mori Skull Band, c. 1745

This ring dates from 1728; the absolute height of the memento mori style. It not only features the affectation of the ‘coffin’ shaped crystal, but it encapsulates the skeleton inlaid in black enamel around the band. Further to this, the element of the full skeleton inside the coffin crystal completes the sentiment. There is nowhere on the jewel that death is not represented.

18th century memento mori skeletal band. A full skeleton, reserved on black enamel, encircles the gold hoop of the ring. Unusually, there is a crown above the skull, signifying death is the master of all, and below the skeletal feet is a tablet engraved with the words memento mori, flanked by symbols of the Passion. The bezel of the ring is in the form of a gold coffin, covered by a faceted crystal, enclosing a skeleton painted in gold on a black ground. To interior, J. B. and the date…

Circa 1700, this high-karat gold skeletal band ring is an example of “Memento Mori” jewelry, which dates to the 16th through the 18th centuries. It was intended to remind the wearer of his or her mortality (memento mori translates to “remember you must die”), and of the fleeting nature of time.

"This variation on a memento mori skeleton ring features the skeleton on a black ground beneath the central crystal (rather than the usual skull or hair seen in rings of this type). The band is a high-carat gold in a beautiful scrolled design with black enameling, and it memorializes the deceased: “J. Gardiner Ob. 19 May 1764 AE 51.” Two smaller crystals bookend the central crystal."
