To the surprise of Lincoln scholars who long believed her correspondence to be lost to history photographic copies of Mary’s solicitous letters recently turned up in stored papers of Robt Todd’s private secretary, Frederic Towers. The letters to Judge Bradwell are indicative of Mary Todd’s succinct but effective letter writing campaign for freedom. Much to Robert’s consternation she won her release after only 3 months confinement.
