Lena Horne. At age 16, Horne dropped out of school and began performing at the Cotton Club in Harlem. A few years later Horne joined Noble Sissle's Orchestra, and later toured with bandleader Charlie Barnet in 1940–41. She went to Hollywood and appeared in a number of MGM musicals, most notably Cabin in the Sky, (1943.) Blacklisted during the McCarthy era, she left Hollywood and established herself as one of the premiere nightclub performers of the post-war era.

The iconic film Stormy Weather (1943), [loosely based on Robinson's own life], follows a soldier coming home from war who wants to start a life as a performer. This 20th Century Fox production was one of the first nationally successful Hollywood films that featured an African-American cast.
