George III was the grandson of George II. In his later years he was known as 'Mad King George'. He is known as 'the King who lost America'. His son ruled as Prince Regent and then as King George IV after his father died. On July 4, 1776, King George III said that nothing important happened today.
"King George V (1865-1936) - father of King George VI (1895-1952). One of the few men in history who can make that beard and moustache combination work (apart from Nicholas II who also looks great) and actually look wonderful in it."
King George V. Anti-German sentiment during WWI caused him to change dynasty name from Saxe-Coburg Gotha to the House of Windsor. Older brother Prince Albert was in line for the throne, but died of pneumonia. George became successor and married his brother's fiance, Mary of Teck. Upon his death, his son Edward ascended the throne but later abdicated in favor of his relationship with American divorcee, Wallis Simpson. On that day "Bertie" became HM King George VI.
