He returned to the states in Nov 1945 and was released from active duty in Jan 1946. He was promoted to captain in the reserves on May 8, 1951.

Steve McQueen joined the Marine Corps in 1947, age 17. He saved the lives of five other Marines during an Arctic exercise, pulling them from a tank before it broke through ice into the sea. He was also assigned to an honor guard responsible for guarding then U.S. President Harry Truman's yacht. McQueen served until 1950 when he was honorably discharged.

John Basilone - He served three years in the United States Army with duty in the Philippines before joining the Marine Corps. In 1940 he joined the Marine Corps and after attending training was sent to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, the Solomon Islands and eventually to Guadalcanal where he held off 3,000 Japanese troops after his 15-member unit was reduced to two men. He was killed in action on the first day of the Battle of Iwo Jima, after which he was posthumously honored with the Navy Cross.
