Shippen Manor, Oxford, New Jersey was built in 1755 on an estate of four thousand acres for Dr. William Shippen and his brother, Joseph Shippen. The brothers owned the nearby Oxford Furnace and stayed at Shippen Manor when they came to visit their investment. Dr. William Shippen was a member of the Continental Congress and counted among his worthy patients George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, John Hancock, and Generals Gage, Howe, and Lafayette.


Anderson’s Neck eventually fell into the hands of the Chesapeake Corporation in the 20th century and became a loblolly pine plantation for the nearby mill. Over time it changed hands to John Hancock Insurance as part of their Timber Investment Management Operation.
