James MONROE, President of the USA, from 1817 to He was the last president who was a Founding Father of the United States, the third of them to die on Independence Day, and the last president from the Virginia dynasty and the Republican Generation.

James Monroe studied law under Thomas Jefferson and went on to be fifth President, serving two terms. He presided over a period of prosperity and westward expansion, otherwise known as "Manifest Destiny."  As Secretary of State during the Jefferson presidency, Monroe was a key participant in the purchase of the Louisiana Territory from the French. Policy of the U. S. towards the emerging countries of Latin America is known as the Monroe Doctrine.

Monroe fought in the American Revolution and last of the Founding Fathers to serve as US president. He is most noted for his Monroe Doctrine, which told European powers the United States would not tolerate further European intervention in the Americas and threatened war if they did. He was the third president to die on the Fourth of July.
