Edisto Island is one of South Carolina's Sea Islands, the larger part of which lies in Charleston County, with its southern tip in Colleton County. The Charleston County part is a census-designated place. The population was 2,301 at the 2000 census. The town of Edisto Beach is located in Colleton County.
The William Seabrook House, also known as the Seabrook, or the Dodge Plantation, built about 1810 on Edisto Island, South Carolina, southwest of Charleston. William Seabrook was a Sea Island cotton planter +part-owner of the Edisto Island Ferry. Tradition indicates that James Hoban, the architect of the White House, was the designer. Seabrook died c. 1837. His widow lived in the house until 1854 or 1855.
