On this day in 610 CE Prophet Muhammad began his emigration from Mecca to Medina and this historic journey is called the Hijra. Muslims across the world remember this journey and celebrate this day as the New Year by visiting the mosque to offer prayers. This year, the day is the start of the Islamic year of AH 1437 and the first month of the Islamic calendar is the month of Muharram.

MUHARRAM. 12nd OCTOBER 2016.  Muharram marks the day of the martyrdom of Prophet Muhammad’s grandson Hazrat Imam Hussein. He was martyred at Karbala in Iraq. Muharram is also the first month of the Islamic calendar and it is called the day of Ashura. On this day members of the Shia community take out processions carrying tazias, which are paper and wood replicas of the martyred Imam Hussein’s tomb at Karbala. They wear black garments and beat their chest in mourning and chant “Ya Hussein”.
