On 4 January 1989, F-14 “Tomcats” (VF-32) from USS John F. Kennedy shot down 2 hostile Libyan MiGs with AIM-7 [Sparrow] and AIM-9 [Sidewinder] missiles in the central Med north of Tobruk in international waters. As a CVW-3 chronicler laconically summed it up: 'USN - 2, Libya - 0.'
