I saw the movie first, which is unusual for me. However, the movie was so good IMO, that I had to read the book. This book is also listed in the book "1000 Books you Should Read Before you Die" - thus it must be good! In may move into my favorites list.... Atonement...amazing book and movie.

Everyone’s heard of Atonement (hey, didn’t that movie win an Oscar?) and likely Amsterdam, McEwan’s 1998 Man Booker winner. But much underrated is his first effort, 1978’s The Cement Garden, a taut, dark psychological novel about four children alone. He didn’t have that “Ian Macabre” nickname for nothing.
All of Ian McEwan's novels are worth reading. Atonement is beautiful, Amsterdam I found to be quite satirical but my favourite is On Chesil Beach. It is a quick and easy reading on the taboo subject of the first honeymoon night when premarital sex was rare.
