The Marshall House in Alexandria, VA.  It is here that the first casualties of the Civil War were claimed.  When the Federal troops invaded Alexandria, this hotel had a huge Confederate flag flying from it.  Colonel Elmer Ellsworth, a personal friend of President Lincoln, decided to take down this flag that could actually be seen from the White House.  When Union Colonel Ellsworth was climbing back down the stairs after removing the flag, he was shot by innkeeper James W. Jackson.  Jackson…
