The Marshall House in Alexandria, VA. It is here that the first casualties of the Civil War were claimed. When the Federal troops invaded Alexandria, this hotel had a huge Confederate flag flying from it. Colonel Elmer Ellsworth, a personal friend of President Lincoln, decided to take down this flag that could actually be seen from the White House.
